A Two Day Celebration of All Things Green on the North Fork of Long Island

Grab the kids and go green this weekend at the first annual East End GreenFest, held at Strawberry Fields Fairgrounds in Mattituck, August 1 and 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. The two day celebration is the first of its kind on the East End, and will include 10 live bands and performers on a solar powered stage, local wineries, farmers’ market, renewable energy exhibits, and organic, natural, and hand-crafted products for sale.

“The GreenFest will be very similar to the Green Fairs in Europe and San Francisco where there is a fun atmosphere filled with live music, unique performers, and lots of energy as people learn about ways to go Green,” said Deborah Dufton of East End GreenFest, “It will be a weekend of good green fun for all.”

A long list of exhibitors will be attending the event from many different Green walks of life including: Renewable Energy, Green Kids, Local Wineries, Organic and Natural Products, Natural Health and Beauty, Green Building, Green Living, Healthy Foods and Beverages, Green Transportation, Earth Friendly Fashion, Waste Reduction, Health and Beauty, Local Businesses, and Non-Profit Associations.

Live music is a central part of the weekend’s festivities with many original acts including Jaden South, the Mondays, Reality Addiction and Yukari Roja. The stage is being powered by Go Solar of Aquebogue, NY in what is believed to be the first concert stage ever powered by solar energy on Long Island. The weekend’s performers include African dancers, a contortionist, a POI arts dancer, and lots of other unique attractions including exhibits from the Atlantis Aquarium and The Riverhead Foundation.

A variety of local and national nonprofit organizations including the Sierra Club and Nature Conservancy will be at the event and the GreenFest has teamed up with the Harry Chapin Food Bank as a designated drop off for LI Cares. The GreenFest asks all attendees to bring non-perishable food items, household items, personal care products and pet food on each day to support Long Island Cares.

Tickets for the GreenFest are available at the gate for $3 for adults and children 12 and under are FREE. Strawberry Fields Fairgrounds is located on Route 48 in Mattituck, NY. For more information on the East End GreenFest please visit www.eastendgreenfest.com.

Hamptons Celebrity Sightings

You can tell by the insane amount of traffic that the celebrities are back in the Hamptons and they’ve brought along rather large entourages this year. The hotels are mobbed, restaurants are overflowing, and parties are standing room only, that is, if you can find any room. Celebs from the A-List down are out and about preening for the cameras. Here’s a snapshot of who was spotted this week.

Dan Aykroyd and Chef Arthur Wolfe at Turtle Crossing - Photo by Nicole CastilloOne half of the Blues Brothers, Dan Aykroyd, and friends dropped by Tex-Mex eatery Turtle Crossing in East Hampton to promote his new Crystal Head Vodka over the weekend. The eye-catching bottle is shaped like a skull and was designed by artist john Alexander. Ever the good host, Dan mixed up Screwdrivers for the crowd that quickly gathered and happily signed autographs and posed for photos. Dan and Co. were invited to stay for dinner by Chef Arthur Wolf but had to decline. Not to be refused, Chef Wolf invited them for lunch the next day and they gladly accepted the offer. A crew of six returned for full lunch that included the famous grilled corn, quesadillas, brisket, and more.

Yes, it’s the Hamptons and yes, that usually means dignified fare but celebrities like Southern-styled cooking. For example, director Steven Spielberg and his kids were seen inhaling ribs and chicken at Turtle Crossing during the week while the Blue Parrot kept a revolving list of celebs well fed and cocktailed. Size-0 ‘stylist to the stars’ Rachel Zoe dropped by Blue Parrot as did cute couple David Lauren and Lauren Bush. Always a man for a party, Donnie Deutsch brought friends by Blue Parrot for a dinner party as model/reality star Kelly Killoren Bensimon enjoyed a nosh.

Grocery shopping is such a chore sometimes but if you shop at Citarella you might spot a few famous faces. Recently Katie Lee Joel (soon to be Ex-Mrs. Billy Joel) and award-winning actor Alan Alda were pushing carts around while movie star Owen Wilson picked up a “To Go” order.

And finally over at the celeb cafeteria, Nick & Toni’s of East Hampton, plenty of paparazzi-stalked friends dropped in for a bite including author Jay McInerney and wife Anne Hearst McInerney, leading man Alec Baldwin had a quiet dinner with girlfriend Nicole Seidel, songstress Amy Irving and family, restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow and wife Linda, and iconic Lou Reed and wife Laurie.

Sweet Endings: Plaza Ruby Red And Plaza Melbatini

If you're tired of drinks that are so strong they knock you out with just the smell than you have to stop by the Plaza Café (71 Hill Street, Southampton, NY, 631-283-9323, fax 631-283-9311, www.plazacafe.us) for an extremely tasty, super balanced cocktail. Stopping by one afternoon I had the pleasure of chatting with bartender George Gulija and sampled a few of their most delicious concoctions - the Plaza Ruby Red and Plaza Melbatini.

Plaza Ruby Red and Plaza Melbatini - Photo by Nicole B. BrewerBoth are a fresh burst of succulent summer flavors but not cloying or overly sweet like most fruit based cocktails tend to lean. These are smooth, refreshing, and perfect alone or after dinner as a dessert cocktail.

It was seasonal ingredients that inspired the Plaza Ruby Red (PRR) and a love of the perfect Peach Melba that conjured the Plaza Melbatini (PM). The PRR is a bright red color with a sweet and tart cherry flavor. The PM is truly a peach rush with a lovely raspberry finish. You've got to try these at home for yourself or better yet, stop by and see George - he'll whip them up for you.

Plaza Ruby Red
2 oz Absolut Citron
1 oz Lime Juice
1 oz Grand Mariner
½ oz Grenadine
• Shaken with ice and strained into a martini glass and garnished with fresh berries.

Plaza Melbatini
2 oz Stoli Peach
¼ oz Peach Nectar or Juice
4 oz Lime Juice
½ oz Peach Schnapps
Float of Chambord
• Shake with ice all but Chambord and strain into martini glass. Pour ½ oz or so of Chambord over a spoon to float. It will settle at the bottom. Garnish with fresh peach and raspberry.

Cheers to a sweet ending!

A Chat With the McCord-van Kempens At The MacDella Cooper Foundation Benefit At Four Seasons Caterer

Simon Van Kempen and Alex McCord - Photo by Wire ImageWith so many events in a Hamptons weekend you rarely find time to sit and have an actual chat with anyone. However, this weekend I squeezed a bit of time while making my rounds to catch up with Alex McCord and Simon Van Kempen, both stars of “The Real Housewives of New York City,” at a benefit for the MacDella Cooper Foundation at Four Seasons Caterer in Southampton.

The couple, who had a rather busy day of socializing, was as sweet and fun as ever in their ‘Hamptons Chic’ attire (she in a dress by the nights featured designer Lalesso). We chatted about our kids (their boys and my girls), her new business ventures, and their trip to Australia. New news: Alex mentioned that Simon had recently stopped smoking. The nasty habit has plagued him for years, she noted with a frown, and he’s stopped cold turkey – good for you Simon! While he admits to being a bit jumpy he hasn’t gotten the munchies so he’ll stay trim for his couture wardrobe for years to come. Love the red leather pants!

Heidi Albertson, Dolly Segal and Barry Segal, MacDella Cooper - Photo by Marc Hall PhotographyYou might now be wondering about this foundation so here’s the scoop... the MacDella Cooper Foundation was started in 2004 by MacDella Cooper, for the purpose of “attracting international investors to Liberian markets and creating awareness of the plight of the Liberian children through her humanitarian initiatives.” The evening in Southampton started with an afternoon of polo in Bridgehampton, dinner, and a fashion presentation by Lalesso. The day of Hamptons frivolity was a clever fundraising effort for the MCF Academy (think Oprah’s school for girls) which will open in Liberia in 2010.

Enjoying the match, dinner, and presentation along with Alex and Simon were Nole Marin a fashion guru and former judge on “America’s Next Top Model,” Heidi Albertson, Dolly and Barry Segal of the Segal Family Foundation, author Jasmin Rosemberg, and the rest of the RHONY cast Mario and Ramona Singer, Bobby and Jill Zarin, and LuAnn de Lesseps.

A New Bromance?

Jon Gosselin and Michael Lohan at polo - Photo by Getty ImagesRecently a new celebrity couple has emerged on the Hamptons scene – Michael Lohan and Jon Gosselin. Michael is the famous father of actress and tabloid cover girl Lindsay Lohan. Jon is the reality television star of the popular show, “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” and tabloid cover guy thanks to his much talked about split from wife Kate Gosselin and recent trips overseas with new girlfriend Hailey Glassman.

Michael and Jon were out to dinner this week at Red Bar in Southampton with Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley, with wife Marianne, and Jill Zarin, with hubby Bobby. An interesting gathering to say the least especially when Jill Twittered earlier in the day that she was, “Working on our book Secrets of a Jewish Mother...sharing ideas tonight at dinner.” Oh to be a fly on the wall…

Yesterday the Bromantic Duo made the rounds with a stop at Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge 2009 at Blue Star Jets Field and stayed tucked under the VIP tent and watched the match and mingled wiht other bold-faced names. Later the duo was at the 6th Annual Hamptons Happening to Benefit the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation in Sagaponack and blended in with the packed masses.

The two dads from all accounts were just “chilling out with the guys for the weekend” as there were no ladies in sight at either event with either fella. One source said that Jon was “cool and relaxed” and stayed “very low key” not vying for cameras or attention unlike his soon-to-be-ex-spouse.

Celebrity Sightings In The Hamptons

When July hits the celebrities come out to the Hamptons to play in the surf, shop the boutiques, and nosh at the areas delicious eateries. Here’s a round-up of who was where. Keep your eyes open while you’re out, you never know who could be standing next to you in line or sitting at the next table.

Christy Turlington and Ed Burns - Photo by Patrick McMullanThe Blue Parrott in East Hampton is a hot spot to see A-Listers like Jon Bon Jovi, who wowed the intimate 50-seat restaurant that he co-owns by putting on a mini show recently. Just check out the YouTube videos. This weekend, “Desperate Housewives” star Kyle MacLachlan dropped by with “Project Runway” producer wife Desiree Gruber and again Jon Bon Jovi and Renee Zellweger each popped in for drinks. Going political, Harold Ford, Chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, stopped in for a bite.

Also nibbling out in East Hampton, world renowned golf architect Rees Jones ordered take-out from Rowdy Hall while professional tennis player Mary Joe Fernandez enjoyed pork quesadillas at Turtle Crossing with her family. CNBC’s Donny Deutsch and his parents and friends were spotted at Matto and they sampled the Branzino, the whole fish served tableside.

Tommy Mottola and Thalia - Photo by Patrick McMullanOn Saturday night, Savanna’s was the place in Southampton to see-and-be-seen. The chic eatery was host to such A-list diners as Steve Tisch, Frankie Pellegrino of legendary New York City eatery Rao’s who chatted with Tony Fortuna about his upcoming line of fine wines, former New York Mets pitcher John Franco, and Fox 5 News’ Rosanna Scotto.

Over at Nick & Toni’s local rubbed elbows with Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, top fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon (he’s the ex-hubby of Kelly Killoren Bensimon of “The Real Housewives of New York City”), Amy Irving, Robert Benton, artist Richard Prince, Keith Hernandez, theatrical dynamo Nathan Lane, music impresario Tommy Mottola and wife Thalia, Harvey Keitel, actor Mark Feuerstein of “Royal Pains,” Christy Turlington and Ed Burns, and jeweler David Yurman.

Flip That Hair And Bring Fetch My Drink

sebastian oppenheim - photo by bravo tvAnother reality show ‘star’ may not be all he seems on the small screen. Though undoubtedly cute, the French speaking, hair flipping Sebastian Oppenheim, a 16-year-old ladies’ man who declared that one of his life goals is to “[hook] up with the hottest girls I can,” of Bravo TV’s “NYC Prep” might be more accustomed to bringing the drinks to the young ladies he flirts with on the show as opposed to doing the ordering.

A source inside the pampered and pristine walls of the iconic Southampton Bath and Tennis Club, which is the summer spot for the very well-heeled Hamptons set, laughed recently when we discussed reality shows and mentioned that Sebastian had been a waiter at the club last summer. While a reliable waiter and well liked by club members, including fellow “NYC Prep” cast mate Jessie Leavitt and her family, he left after a brief stint in club whites for another club in the Hamptons where he would get “better exposure with the right people.” Clearly that plan worked and he’s now exposing his suave teen moves on girls across Manhattan and on television screens across the country.

Polo Loving VIPs Hit The Field

Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge 2009 at Blue Star Jets Field VIP tent - Photo by Rob Rich VIP’s, pseudo-celebrities, and social networkers put on the requisite Hamptons Summer Chic attire and headed over to the polo fields in Bridgehampton for the opening day of the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge 2009 at Blue Star Jets Field. For nearly three hours the group jockeyed for prime viewing space – so they could see and be seen but not necessarily watch the professionals on the field atop their pampered ponies.

Desperate Housewives star Kyle MacLachlan and wife Desiree Gruber with son Callum - Photo by Rob RichWith nary a glass of champagne in sight (oh no!) the vodka flowed like a river and new snack PopChips kept folks satisfied as they shopped the pop-up venues for OPTXY by Gruen and Ralph Lauren. Notables including “Gossip Girl” star Chace Crawford (who was celebrating his 24th birthday), Kourtney Kardashian was looking cozy with boyfriend Scott Disick, “Desperate Housewives” star Kyle MacLachlan and wife Desiree Gruber, Beth Ostrosky (minus hubby Howard Stern), Star Jones, “Real Housewives of New York City” maven Jill Zarin and her family, co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios Ben Silverman, actor Sebastian Stam, and Ralph Lauren model and polo player Nacho Figueras situated themselves in the V-VIP tent as regular VIP’s vied for a chance to sneak under the velvet ropes and upgrade their status.

Ms. Jones, Star Jones, that is of course as you know has split from hubby Al Reynolds and “The View” as well as her own Court TV show so maybe she’s feeling the pinch of the economy. Well, I hear that instead of designer frocks with big price tags she was wearing a $20 dress. Not that there’s anything wrong about economizing but I’m surprised that Star is the new poster child for low-budget chic.

Other faces in the crowd included Edward Tricomi, Sir Ivan and Bunny Mina, Richard Johnson and Sessa von Richthofen, Wass Stevens, Rachel Heller, Emanuel Sylvano, Glenn Myles, Amelia Doggwiler, Marc Simon, firness celebrity John Basedow, Emma Snowdon-Jones, and Ryann Logan.

More polo news and celebrity sightings to come next week from this weekend’s match on Saturday.

Oh No She Didn’t (Well, Yep, She Did)

Ramona Singer - Photo by Patrick McMullanReality TV fans watch, or at least keep an eye on from time to time, the now four versions of the Bravo TV “Real Housewives” franchise. Well most of the New York ladies are all about the spotlight and diva behavior as we all know and read about in tabloids weekly. Take for example Ramona Singer and this tid-bit about your favorite frantic reality “star” at a party in the Hamptons.

Just days ago Ramona was set to co-host a birthday party for a Hamptons social somebody and blew a gasket before the photogs appeared. She arrived almost on time and heard that the time of the party had changed; our dear sweet Ramona went stark raving mad. Ramona screeched the F-word liberally to waitresses, reamed out the stunned chef, and ranted and raved until her friends started showing up. Well you should have seen her change from lunatic to social climber as she was all smiles for the photographers and blew air kisses to the assemblage.

Minutes later the huffing and puffing woman with the rather bulging eyes, known for her condescending statements about being a classy lady on her show, pushed herself behind the bar and grabbed three bottles of beer, shoved them into her oversized purse, and left the party swearing again like a drunken sailor. Needless to say the other hosts, the chef and restaurant owner, and guests were embarrassed and appalled at her actions. Had she checked her voicemail she would have known about the time change but then we wouldn’t have that juicy story to start the weekend.

Enjoy and have a fabulous sunny weekend in the Hamptons!

Celeb Spotting In The Hamptons

Beth Ostrosky Stern - Photo by Rob RichWhat a busy weekend in the Hamptons for celebrity spotting! Renée Zellweger, the rumored silent investor in the Tex-Mex hotspot The Blue Parrott in East Hampton, hosted an impromptu get-together with friends that included dinner and drinks. She and guests were later seen dancing atop the banquettes as music blasted through the East End hang-out. A little birdie told me that a certain NYC reality diva and Countess was seen there as well.

Earlier on Saturday, Mrs. Howard Stern, Beth Ostrosky, hosted an afternoon fête with iconic fashion house Halston and Social Life Magazine publisher Justin Mitchell at the Social Life Estate in Water Mill. Dressed in a dyed white and aqua gown Beth alos sported a glittering diamond necklace - it's good to be Mrs. Stern.

Guests, who included "The Real Housewives of New York City" castmate Kelly Killoren Bensimon and news anchor Chuck Scarborough and his wife Ellen, shopped the designs and sipped cocktails as a portion of proceeds from the day were donated to the Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons.

The big summer events start this weekend with the opening day of the polo series, Russell Simmons' annual Art For Life gala, and so much more. See you out and about!

God's Love We Deliver Summer Benefit In The Hamptons

Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of working with producer and artist David Nadal to cover the annual God's Love We Deliver Summer Benefit in Sagaponack. Hundreds of charitable folks dropped by for the cocktail party despite the rainy night including Simon Doonan of Barneys New York, interior designer and noted potter Jonathan Adler, Vice President of IMG Fashion Fern Mallis, and scores more. After gaining national attention thanks to Joan Rivers on NBC's "The Celebrity Apprentice" with Donald Trump, the orginization looks forward to serving their ten millionth meal to a deserving New Yorker fighting AIDS or battling cancer. To donate or volunteer check out http://www.godslovewedeliver.org/.

Twilight Star Hits The Hamptons

Kellan LutzForget fireworks, Social Life Magazine fêted the Fourth of July in style with "Twilight" and "90210" heartthrob Kellan Lutz, who celebrated his recent cover with Publisher Justin Mitchell at the issue launch party, held at the magazine’s Hamptons estate this Saturday. While his co-cover model, socialite Lydia Hearst, was a no-show at the exclusive event, Kellan was kept company with fellow "90210" star Annalynne McCord.

Guests at the event also included, Bravo’s “Real Housewives of New York City” stars Kelly Killoren Bensimon and Alex McCord with husband Simon Van Kempen, and NASCAR Development Driver Tim George Jr. Serving as a backdrop to the hot event was the brand new Social Life Estate, which spans a breathtaking 10,000-square-feet.

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Go Shopping

Brad Pitt in Tom FordWhen it comes to mantras that just make you happy, “When the going gets tough the tough go shopping,” is one of my favorites. A little stress melts away as I browse the shops and if I happen to find a great pair of shoes or some fabulous jewelry its all the better. And I’m not alone, recently mega-famous director and East Hampton resident Steven Spielberg was recently spotted browsing the looks at OPTYX by Gruen (10 Main Street, East Hampton) where he ordered a pair of lenses. Guess he needed a bit of retail therapy too.

So what are the hot looks for lenses these days? The sun will come out in the Hamptons at some point so you’d better be prepared. The trends point to something retro-inspired - think Jackie O or aviator styles. Ray Ban, Oliver Peoples, Tom Ford, and Gucci create stunning aviator styles seen on the glamorous faces of Angeline Jolie, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Husdon. While fashion forward stars like Ciara and Estelle opt for larger more colorful frames with plenty of bling from Bulgari, Cartier, and Chanel.

Consider the shape of your face before you select a pair of sunglasses. If you have a round or oval face look for rectangular or square frames that will offset the shape of your face and bring out the beauty. If oversized frames make you look a bit like a bug then pass on that trend. Trends only work if they work for you not the other way around. When it comes to the lenses look for the highest level of protection you can manage with light blocking Polarized filters and glare coatings.

Pick a frame, enjoy your retail therapy, and go be Hamptons fabulous!
